Self-Disclosure on Social Network Sites: a Theoretical Review

Abstract

Social Network sites appearance extended the opportunity to disclose personal information in one-to-many communications, becoming a source to research self-disclosure in online context. Despite increasing amount of empirical research, the unified approach of self-disclosure study has not been developed. The article reveals, systematizes and analyses the most promising self-disclosure theories. The review of the research includes 53 studies published between 1999 and 2017 the analysis showed communication Privacy Management (cPM) is the most popular theory, which considers the greatest number of self-disclosure influencing factors.
